Kelp Farming, San Francisco, CA
Design concept and presentation
Graduate studio, Fall 2008, UCB
Based on the presumption that climate change is affecting the
natural habitat of plant and animal species, moving their
preferred climates farther north, an using San Francisco's
'refugee city' status as an opportunity to serve as host to some of
these fleeing species the concept turns the SF Bay into a home
for the entire ecosystem that is sustained by giant kelp, by
creating kelp farms. The farms are anchored by inflated, floating
pod dwellings that house the kelp farmer/harvester, serving as an
opportunity for human refugees to find work and housing in the
city while establishing themselves enough with all
the benefits of the urban environment.
